How quickly does protein work?

There are a number of different popular forms of protein including whey protein isolate, whey protein concentrate, casein, pea protein and brown rice protein.

Whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate are absorbed the most quickly. Mixing them with water helps the digestion process allowing your body to break down the protein into amino acids and deliver them to your body in under 45 minutes. That’s why most people tend to consume their protein shakes with water immediately after their workout – to replenish nutrients and glycogen stores, and get amino acids to their muscles when they are most readily absorbed.

There may be times when you might want a more steady supply of amino acids. For example when you haven’t worked out or overnight while you’re sleeping. You can do this by mixing your protein with milk or incorporating casein into your shake. This allows for a more gradual release of amino acids into your body.
