Based in New York, Lauren turned her passion for health and fitness into a profession – qualifying as a personal trainer and yoga instructor. She sat down with Innermost to explain why she can’t resist the odd burger and fries, and why Rumi is never far from her thoughts.
“I’ve always had a passion for health and fitness. It was in my teens that I began to understand that health and fitness could be enjoyable rather than simply a way to lose weight or build muscle. Having qualified as a personal trainer and yoga instructor, my philosophy is that the focus on fitness should be on doing things you enjoy. Appearance doesn’t necessarily dictate health, but being healthy takes your body to a better place. Once you shift focus, you’ll see your body as the sum of what it can do, rather than individual parts. Recently, I’ve become more aware of how food impacts my body and mind. Q2: What’s your hustle?
I’m currently working to make information about mobility, flexibility, and proper movement patterns available to the masses. So much of the pain and injury we suffer from can be prevented with education and simplified implementation.
Q3: What do you do to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
I focus on keeping my stress down, making sure I get enough sleep, and finding ways to recover from my daily and varied sweat sessions.
Q4: What does #liveinnermost mean to you?
The body is truly at the will of the mind. If you can push yourself and you have people that believe in you, you’ll be able to accomplish more than you ever imagined possible.
Q5: Usual breakfast?
I’ll start with a glass of warm lemon water. Then I’ll wait until I feel hungry and have a piece of fruit or two to hold me over before my second breakfast of avocado toast!
Q6: Biggest health vice?
Every single time I get my diet in check for a week or two, I am overcome with the desire for a burger and fries. I usually cave.
Q7: Your last workout?
Quick and definitely sweaty. 10 minutes on the stair master. Then I moved to a back and deadlift workout which included heavy barbell deadlifts, jumping pull ups, kettlebell deadlifts, and cable reverse flys. I finished up with a 10 minute AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) of jump squats, plank jacks, and push ups. 40 minutes plus a quick warm up/cool down and I was done!
Q8: What’s on your bucket list?
Attend a silent meditation retreat – I’ve always wanted to deepen my (almost nonexistent) practice. Get a puppy – but it never seems like the right time. Do 10 consecutive pull ups – I’d never imagined I would be able to do one, but I’ve made it up to 3 so far!
Q9: Favourite inspirational quote/words?
“Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are that.” – Rumi. I like to remind myself of this whenever I begin to create self-imposing limitations and need to get out of my own way.
